CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Competing in the first-ever Mid-South Conference Wrestling Duals, Lindsey Wilson College picked up wins against University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and West Virginia University Institute of Technology on Saturday at Gosser Gym.
The Blue Raiders topped Cumberlands 22-18 and blanked West Virginia Tech 54-0. Lindsey Wilson lost to tournament champion and host Campbellsville (Ky.) University 30-6 and fell to Cumberland (Tenn.) University 38-12.
"The team is progressively improving, but we definitely started the day pretty flat," explained Lindsey Wilson head coach Corey Ruff. "We weren't finishing on the edge of the mat or taking advantage of several scoring opportunities when they presented themselves. But we bounced back nicely, and walked out of the duals a better team."
Trailing 15-10 to Cumberlands, Lindsey Wilson started its path to the comeback win with a 3-1 decision by Andrew Hairston over Damion Stephenson at 174 pounds to bring the Blue Raiders within two points.
Jacob Ilg followed Hairstons win with a pin of Jaron Singley at 184 pounds to give Lindsey Wilson a 19-15 lead. Bill Semones lost an 8-3 decision at 197 pounds to Fred Byars that brought Cumberlands within one before heavyweight Zach Marshall topped Carlton Thompson 12-6 to seal the win.
After taking seven forfeit decisions against West Virginia Tech due to roster limitations, Lindsey Wilson won at 197 pounds as Semones pulled out a 4-2 decision against J.R. Kerns and heavyweight Teddy Furnish edged Ben Harper 6-5 to complete the shutout.
In the loss to Campbellsville, 125-pounder Keith Klink posted a 5-3 decision against Johnny Papesh, while Jacob Shirley turned in a 13-9 decision against Seth Lucas at 149 pounds.
The Blue Raiders won two individual matches against Cumberland as well with 133-pounder Brian Thompson defeating Ryan McKenzie 4-2 and Hairston winning a 10-1 major decision over Andrew Blackwell.
Lindsey Wilson had three wrestlers named All Mid-South Conference with Keith Klink, Andrew Hairston and Jacob Shirley receiving the honors. Klink was also named an Academic All-Conference selection.
